War Heroes: Invasion

Review

The invasion is on the way! The oppressive enemy forces are attacking our land from every direction and most of our officers have already fallen on the battlefields. Our only hope to vanquish our enemies is to find an exceptional leader with a deep understanding of strategy to lead us to victory! The lucky commander will also have access to the last three of our military heroes to help him out. Will you be up to the task as the invader ramps up his attacks? It’s your time to become a war hero and repel the invasion!

War Heroes: Invasion is a tower defence game where you have to prevent several waves of invading forces in order to reach your headquarters to win each mission.

The game offers several modes of play:  the campaign, the survival, and the night modes. To unlock the last two (survival and night), you must first win that mission in the campaign mode in order to access the other two modes.  When you start the game, you’ll only have access to one of the three heroes to help you through these hectic battles. As you win more battles, you’ll be able to unlock the other two. Each of these heroes will have three specific attacks at their disposal; it could be laying mines, dropping paratroopers somewhere on the map, using a sniper rifle as well as others. It really depends which heroes you are using.  The only bugger is that you have to wait around 30 seconds each time you activate one before you can re-use it.

In the first few missions, the waves of enemies will come from only one side of the map but as you progress through the game, infantry waves will start moving in from a few directions. You’ll also be attacked by planes, tanks, machine gunners, kamikazes and colonels, as well as enemy paratroopers who land anywhere within the map, just to mention a few. Additional, stronger enemy soldiers (28 in total) will be introduced with each new mission to spice up the battle a bit further.

In terms of towers, for the first couple of missions they will be pretty basic; as you progress through the stages, new ones will be available to your arsenal. In total, there are 15 towers and 32 upgrades.

At the start of each battle, you’ll have a certain number of dollars to pay and place your first towers on specific unoccupied locations on the map. Then when you’re ready, press the big red button to start the battle! You’ll accumulate additional money each time you eliminate an enemy soldier. With this money, you’ll be able to either upgrade your current towers or purchase new ones, placing them on any remaining free positions on the map. There is also broken equipment on the battlefield which you can repair to help your army. This equipment is usually quite expensive, but if you can rebuild it, it will boost your towers attacks or sight incoming planes sooner.

At the end of each winning mission, your chosen heroes will receive medals if he/she has levelled up. You can use these medals to upgrade their skill set (four in total, per hero). If you win a battle without your headquarters being damaged, you’ll also receive 3 golden bullets which you can use to buy new upgrades for your towers and headquarters.

Touching quickly on the survival and night modes . . . I really like the challenges in both modes. In the survival mode, not only are there fewer positions in which to place your towers, but the onslaught of enemy troops is just amazing!  It might take you a while to survive a 50-second battle – really intense and fun! The night mode is a bit tricky as your troops can only see the enemy soldiers under the lights - really tough!

The graphics are very nice and in terms of controls, you’ll be using your mouse. I did experience a couple of crashes but apart from that, it’s a great game!
