A new style of Volleyball has erupted all over the world! The one-against-one Volleyball competition will see you travelling the world from Canada to Japan to craft your skill and style with a view to win the three major competitions and be crowned the European, National and World Cup winner! It’s time to serve, jump, block and hit the ball hard into the opponent’s side of the court in Volleyball Challenge.

Volleyball Challenge is a colourful arcade sports game developed and self-published by Simplicity Games on the 21^st of April 2023, on the Steam platform.

The game consists of twelve courts (countries), each having three competitions to participate in and fifteen matches to win. You also have the possibility of playing against a friend, either on the same keyboard or on gamepads if you have two of them connected to your PC.

To access a competition, you must first clear a certain number of courts (countries) and have the specific number of coins requested to enter the competition. Each competition will give big rewards if you become the champion. The reward will be a large number of coins, player cards and gems which you will need to upgrade your skills and superpowers and unlock new outfits!

Before you get there, you’ll have to win all fifteen matches per court. The conditions for winning a game are fairly straightforward. A clean win is when you manage to beat the opponent 3-0, which will occur most of the time when you get the feel of the game, and especially when you have upgraded a fair few skills and superpowers. But if the match is tight, and let’s say that the score is 3-2 in your favour, you just need another winning point to make it 4-2 and the victory is yours! The rewards will be coins, experience points and a bag! For tournaments, you will need to win two sets all the way up to the semi-final, and three in the final.

As you gain experience, you will also receive more coins after each match, which is always a plus. You can access your bags on the main screen; the bag button is in the bottom right corner. You can only store five bags at any given time, and to open most bags you usually need coins, while others have a countdown of a couple of hours before you can open them and receive goodies. There’s only one variety of goods per bag; it could be more coins, player cards (to unlock outfits) or a gem to upgrade your skills. I only saw one gem per bag, but the number will vary if the rewards are cards or coins. For example, you could get 500 coins or 20,000 coins; for cards, you might have one to five player cards, depending on which one you receive. There are three types of player cards: Normal, Special and Legendary. In total, you have 42 outfits to unlock between all three categories.

There are four different skills that you can upgrade, and each one has a few sub-skills. Make sure you have plenty of gems when you decide to go and upgrade your skills. The superpowers are ten in total, and you can upgrade them too, but you need coins to do so. The upgrade will shorten the time to charge your superpower and increase the power’s duration.

Regarding the gameplay, it is simplistic and quite addictive for a while, but unfortunately, it quickly becomes repetitive. And you’ll probably find one or two ways to win most of the points. It is the nature of the game. It is quite fun to play with someone on the same PC, but the enjoyment wears off rapidly, even after a few matches. It’s best played in short bursts.
