The Adventurous Four

Review

The Adventurous Four is the sequel to Wild Island Quest, a choice’s matter visual novel game by NLB Project.

The game starts with you (Henry) snuggled up to your newly wedded wife in bed, with your dog Snoopy at the foot of the bed. You are woken by Snoopy as he barks at someone ringing the doorbell, disturbing your Sunday morning lie in. You crawl out of your pit and go to check who is at the door at this time of the morning. It’s Doyle, a friend of yours, who seems excited and starts to explain why he’s here so early. He says that he’s just finished his project which he’s been working on for the last three years and wants you and your wife, Irene, to be one of the first to see it.

Doyle doesn’t want to say what it is and spoil the surprise, so he asks you to come to his laboratory later that afternoon (waking you up at 6am was already a surprise). Doyle leaves, so you crawl back into your pit, Snoopy following you.  Irene asks who was at the door, and you explain that it was Doyle who has something he wants to show you both later. You sweet talk Irene a little before falling back to sleep.

Later, the couple are heading to Doyle’s through the streets of Mech City; it’s such a beautiful day, but unusually, on this Sunday the streets are empty. You start wondering what Doyle’s surprise is when suddenly you hear the stomping of boots from behind and find yourself being lifted into the air, followed by “How are you?” while putting your surprised self back down on your feet. It’s Conan, another friend who had been waiting for Henry and Irene to pass so that all three of them could go and see what Doyle has in store for them at his laboratory.

You arrive at Doyle’s place where you find him pacing up and down waiting for your arrival. Immediately the three of you notice this huge object hidden under a cover as you enter his lab. Doyle starts to explain how he hopes it will contribute to the development of Mech City science. As he yanks off the covers, it reveals a ship; not just any ship, but an air ship! Doyle is full of joy as he explains that he intends to explore the endless world around them, discovering all the little mysterious islands and floating continents in the endless expanse.

Henry remembers their last adventure to Wild Island and doesn’t want to go on another adventure, but after some persuasion from the others they all decide to head off together. Doyle still has a few things to sort out and tells everyone they’ll leave in a week, so they have time to prepare for their journey ahead. With everything agreed upon, the four friends go their separate ways.

The following week, they all meet up at Doyle’s lab and go over the provisions that they’ve brought.  Then Doyle prepares to heat the balloon on his ship; as it slowly rises you all board the ship and set off on your journey into the unknown. From here you’ll start making choices as to how your adventure will unfold. Depending on which skills you choose for Doyle (Herbalist/Technician) and Conan (Stealth/Strength), you will experience different outcomes to other choices which you’ll have to make throughout the game.

There are a few settings: Graphics – Resolution, Fullscreen, Sound – Volume, Music On/Off, Click Sounds On/Off, Other – Scrolling Mode, Mouse Filter, Keyboard Mode, Language, Auto-Save On/Off. You’ll also find 5 Save Slots to save your game and Resume/Restart game.
