Take the Cake

Review

Welcome to Take the Cake: Take Control of Frank, our protagonist, a friendly furball that wants his cake back. You must retrieve the stolen cake from the robot thief that stole it. Your journey will be full of dangerous traps and deadly enemies. You will run, jump, alter your size, change colors and manipulate gravity as you travel through the world. Death awaits you at every corner as you seek out and collect all the pieces of cake that have fallen around the levels.

Take the Cake was released in Nov, 2017. It is the first title released on steam by Developer, Ebenit. It is an Action Adventure Indie title that holds true to the genre. It has many traps and obstacles, along with deadly enemies and epic bosses that want to see you fail. The vibrant neon graphics do not overpower the game. The puzzles are intriguing and well designed. As you progress through the game the mechanics continue to change to keep things fresh and fun, and is not just a repetitive run and jump game.

The game begins with the first few levels helping to teach you the basic gameplay; instead of having to play a tutorial, the game merged the tutorial with the gameplay, which I do like. It has been designed very well. As you progress the game will get increasingly more difficult with new enemies and mechanics. You will manipulate both gravity and your color to pass through the environment. I will not speak of all the mechanics of the game as some things are better left to discover yourself. The game also has partial controller support for those who like to use controllers. As the game only requires the use of a few keys to play, the partial support is adequate.

I have really enjoyed my time playing Take the Cake; the gameplay surpassed my expectation in so many ways. The Mechanics of the game are really brilliant, as they constantly change throughout the game. Achievements are fairly easy to reach 100%. The game is not too hardcore for the average player, either. Some levels are a bit difficult, but mastering them and making progress will come if you just keep playing. The electronic soundtrack is soothing and not overbearing, while still being fitting for the game.

I had one issue with the game not working with the steam overlay, so taking screenshots would not work, which disappointed me, as I am a screenshot addict. A patch to address this issue would be greatly appreciated (I would have scored this a 9 otherwise). Also: there is no colorblind mode for those of us who are colorblind. The game is still playable with this condition, as the neon colors they used are not too hard to tell apart, but it did make it more difficult for me. I almost passed up reviewing this title when I learned that its gameplay was dependent on colors. But the game looked so much fun I decided to go for it! I have no regrets, even with my colorblindness - it was a fantastic play and I look forward to future releases by this developer.
