Space Battlecruiser

Review

As the last remaining battlecruiser from your colony that was devastated years ago, you will travel deep into the solar system in your capital ship and wage war against a space fleet of enemies hell-bent on destroying you.  Annihilate a mixed variety of enemy fleets in every sector of the galaxy till you reach the enemy overlord that commands the forces from the mothership.  Destroy it as you seek revenge and freedom for your colony, driving the invaders out once and for all, freeing the solar system from their reign. You will face a variety of forces, ranging in size and strength, while building up your arsenal and ships defenses needed to face the mothership.

Space Battlecruiser is an arcade-style top down space shooter, released in April 2018 and self-published by developer Less Describable Games. The game’s tutorial system will teach you the basics of the gameplay, though playing the tutorial is not required. Veteran players of this genre can jump right into the action! It has an extensive upgrade system for weapons and armor to prepare for the ultimate battle that awaits you. Use your drones to collect scraps and components from the ships you destroy for repairing and upgrading your own ship.

Space Battlecruiser is a vibrant action title. The graphics are well-designed with good detail on the enemy fleets as well as on the background of the universe. Its multi-tiered upgrade system will have you pulverizing the opposing ships, so you can collect their remains for your own use. You start taking on lower level ships while you build up and progress to more challenging enemies. Launching into a sector with enemies that are too strong, before you are upgraded enough, can end in disaster for you. Fear not; if you get in over your head, you are able to use your warp drive to escape the area and live to fight another day.

I really do not have much in the way of negative points for this title. I would have liked to have had options for changing the resolution of the game, but the resolution dropdown menu held no settings; the only thing you get is an empty dropdown menu. Besides that, it is a pretty solid title in the genre. It has a decent soundtrack and sound effects for the price and fits it well. It is not overly difficult once you gain a grasp of the controls, which the built-in tutorial will help you learn. There is a limited turn demo available on Steam to try before you buy.

So climb aboard your ship, Captain, and lead it to victory, freeing your people once and for all!
