Review

Once upon a time, a lady (a witch) and her two sons were living happily in a forest, until the day the king’s army came to their settlement and took her away. To make matters worse, somebody unsettled the goblins who lived on the other side of the forest. Who would do this, and how will the sons rescue their Mum? It’s the tale of the son of a witch!    

Son of a Witch is an action/ beat’em up/ co-op game where you take control of one of four characters to free your mother.

As you reach the main menu, you’ll be able to play either a local, network or daily challenge game.

In your first game, you ‘ll be able to choose between a knight and a wizard. There are other heroes, but you must achieve specific tasks to unlock them.

From here, each of the games you play will be randomly generated. At the start of each of game (single player or regular) you’ll be given a special book or item to help you through your journey. To give you an example, you may receive a book of fire. Every time you enter a new room, enemies will be on fire for several seconds and will lose health points as a consequence. You might get other books or items which are basically randomized in each playthrough.

It’s going to be a tough road ahead playing on your own. Personally, I managed to get to the third boss by myself and I must say I had a hard time to get there. I must say that the bosses stages are very challenging (single player) to say the least and you might have alternative bosses in each of your playthroughs.

There is plenty of stuff to pick up in this game. As you kill an enemy, they will drop either coins, potions, scrolls or items. The other way to pick up items is to drop bombs (if you have them) on stones which are part of the levels layout or simply find a blue chest which you can open by touching it, or a golden chest if you have a golden key on hand. Some of the stones will hide a specific its but you must have a bomb to destroy the stone to get what is inside them.

Within each of the levels, you’ll get to shops which are labelled in skin coloured doors. Some of the shops will give you pets, scrolls, amulets and weapons. All these items will cost you some money. So, make sure to pick up as many coins as you can in order to purchase any items in the shops.

In terms of your hero, he will have a fast and strong attack. As you slash your way through enemies, your power will grow and give you access to a powerful strike which will give you enemy substantial damage.   

You can also purchase pets which can help you cause ibn many ways but at the end of the day you have to make sure you pick up or find the best weapon to get you to the next level which can be tricky at times, especially if you play on a single player.

Graphically the game look very good and the soundtrack is great. You can play on a single player or online if you wish to do so.  In terms of controls, I strongly recommend using a gamepad for this game.
