Rome: The Mystery of the Chronovisor - Hidden Objects

Review

What is the Chronovisor? The Chronovisor is a device that allegedly allows its user to see events, like a movie, that occurred at any time in the past. It is alleged that the Vatican is holding and hiding such a device within its walls. Archaeologists like yourself have tried to locate this device for many years without success. But your recent investigation reveals that the Chronovisor is indeed hidden somewhere in Rome! Will you be the one to uncover The Mystery of the Chronovisor - Hidden Objects?

Rome: The Mystery of the Chronovisor - is a hidden objects puzzle game developed and self-published by Crisp App Studio on the 20th of May, 2023, on the Steam platform.

I’ve played pretty much all the games that Crisp App have published on Steam, and I am a big fan of their 360° panoramic levels lacking in their last couple of titles. But to my surprise and joy, this new game has only 360° panoramic levels!

The game is divided into four parts due to the storyline, which I will let you discover, and it is quite a fun little story. You’ll be playing in thirteen of the most iconic locations in Rome, such as the Trevi Fountain, Roman Forum, Colosseum, and Piazza Navona. You’ll be revisiting these locations many times during this game, and as you only have thirteen locations, you might think that at a certain point, you’ll know where all the objects are hidden within each canvas. Well, you’ll be surprised! Not only do many objects frequently move position within each level, but some will also look different and new objects will be introduced, too. I realised this when I reached part three of the story, and a gamepad appeared as an object to find. From that time, I was more attentive and tried to determine if it was a one-off object or if more new objects would pop up! I can’t recall if this was the case in the first two parts of the game, but it happened a couple more times since I noticed it.

The thirteen 360° panoramic images are crystal clear, and many of the objects are perfectly disguised within the images, to the point that on more than one occasion you will miss many objects that you are looking for. It has been a long time since I’ve had to use the hint button in these games, but I am happy to admit that I used it frequently in Rome: The Mystery of the Chronovisor. And before people start telling me it’s time to get new glasses, my current glasses are new, thank you very much! It is very well done.

You have to find ten objects per level to complete the game. In most levels, you’ll be given the words of the 10 objects to find, but occasionally, you’ll be shown the objects in the large box at the bottom of your screen. As mentioned, many objects are well-blended in the image, but before using the hint button, you can zoom into the image with the wheel of your mouse to determine if it is one of the items you are looking for. If you are not sure what the word of the object looks like, you can use the image hint button, which is located on the left side of your screen, right next to the menu button. However, you are limited as to how often you can use this function.

It will take you around 4 to 5 hours to complete the game, which is a good length for titles of this genre. The graphics are good, with plenty of items to find, and the soundtracks accompany the game very well. I would have loved to have had more locations to play through, as it gets repetitive after you know the images well, but that’s my only negative point for this game; this is one of the best games Crisp App has produced so far.
