Rock of Ages 2

Review

Why did you decide to go to war against Zeus? Wasn’t obvious that you would be defeated?! Look at you now, Mr Atlas - the leader of the Titans. You are Zeus’ little pet! How does it feel to carry the world on your shoulders while the almighty God enjoys his newest passion, painting? Oh no, by the name of Zeus, you dropped the world. . . what are you waiting for? Get it back . . . Dear oh dear, that’s not the world, it’s a boulder . . . not a clever fellow, are you Atlas? Just when you think it can’t be worse, you fall down to earth with your boulder! Welcome to Rock of Ages 2.

Rock of Ages 2 is a combination of a parkour/racing and tower defence game where you have to defeat legendary characters (as well as some quirky monsters) throughout ages, by squashing them with a boulder.

Before you manage to squash your opponents, you must smash the gates of his/her castle to pieces. The trick is, Mr Atlas, they going to try to flatten you ahead of being pressed like a leaf themselves. It will take both of you several stones before destroying the doors of each castle. Make sure your boulder reaches its full speed and is not damaged in order to maximise the power when it slams into the doors. You will be given a set of coins at the start of each of your runs to spend on your defences. These defences will inflict damage on your opponent’s rocks and if you are really clever, Mr Atlas (it might happen), you could even destroy his/her boulder before it reaches the castle gate. Make sure to choose carefully which units to use before entering the battle. Bear in mind, some are inexpensive but don’t inflict too much damage to your opponent’s boulders.  While other units seem to be over-priced, they will deliver greater damage to their boulders. However, you’ll only be able to place a certain number of each unit on the parkour. For example, you can only place ten catapults within the map. If any have been destroyed by your opponent’s runs, you will be able to put them back into the parkour (if you have enough coins) but you won’t be able to place them in their previous positions. There are plenty of fun units; some, like the cow field unit, are designed to slow down your rival boulder, and others (like the big canon) will cause massive damage, but will reload slowly. The catapult or ballista units will reload quickly, but they don’t cause much damage to the rock. The other ways to cause or be damaged is by sticking to the parkour or falling off the map.

I nearly forgot one more thing about the boulders . . . at the start of the campaign, you only have one at your disposal, but as soon as you beat an enemy, you’ll unlock his/her boulder. Not all rocks are the same; some will have better acceleration, be stronger and/or bigger, or cause more damage than others.  Some will also have special abilities, which can help you in different ways.  Make sure to explore the map and don’t neglect to pick up new units on your way to your next enemy castle. I really like the hilarious cut-scenes before you play against the new enemy. I was in stiches more than once - MARVELOUS!

The other good thing is that you can play two versus two online, which is a lot of fun.

Graphically the game is great and runs like a charm; I personally did not experience any crashes. However, the game does seem to take a while to launch. The controls are working fine whether you play with a gamepad or the keyboard.
