Racing Glider

Review

This may come as a bombshell to many of you . . . yes, I am a racing enthusiast! I have been watching motorsports since I was swimming in the pond with all my tadpole comrades, and even from that early stage I have wondered how racing would evolve. Rally is one of those motorsports that I admire, as the drivers must play a tactful symphony with their fingers and toes in order to be the one who manages to go the fastest around a specific track. Let’s project to a future where cars are replaced by a style of hovercraft, and racing circuits are found in the sky as well as on the ground! This futuristic sport will be named Racing Glider!

Racing Glider is a futuristic racing game where you control a fast hovercraft on small tracks with beautiful scenery. At the time of writing this review, Racing Glider has been released as an early access and therefore I can only comment on what I have seen so far.

At this stage, the game offers one mode, which is the time trial, and four different levels of difficulty, from rank I to rank IV. All the ranks include classic and reverse tracks (racing the circuit in the opposite way), giving 18 tracks in total per rank so far (nine each for both classic and reverse).  Only two tracks out of nine are available in Rank I (classic and reverse), Rank II and Rank III have 4 tracks out of 9 available at present (classic and reverse) while Rank IV has only one track out of nine at this point of time.

Your goal is to get to the finish line as fast as possible, with most of the tracks taking up to 1 minute and 30 seconds to complete. As with all time trials, you must beat the track under a certain time to score a golden medal in the shape of the hovercraft, and to be very honest with you, it starts to be quite difficult as soon as you play the difficulty Rank II. One of the good things right now is that you can play any track from any difficulty, which gives you a sense of how the difficulty increases between the ranks.

In terms of settings, you’ll be racing in forests, jungles, mountains, volcanos and nebulas; the scenery is absolutely superb.

The gameplay is fairly standard, as you have to make sure not to touch any elements (such as rocks, trees, walls, small poles or arches), or your vehicle will suffer an abrupt decline in speed and might therefore be outside the time limit for scoring a medal. Be careful of jumps, especially if you’re using your booster energy, as you might land outside the track, which will require you restarting the race. I really like the Nebula and Volcano circuits as they are in the sky without any elements on either side of the track (just a deep drop into the water if you miss a turn). They are tricky to navigate, which is a lot of fun! The vehicle is pretty responsive and feels good going around the tracks.

The developer is working on new game modes, adding new vehicles as well as improving and creating new tracks, which is good to hear.

Great graphics with a cool soundtrack. The controls work fine either with a gamepad or your keyboard. Needs more content, as you would expect with an early access.

Positives

+ Nice graphics and sceneries
+ Good soundtrack
+ Controls are responsive (gamepad & keyboard)
+ Developer is working on new modes, vehicles and new tracks

Negatives

- Needs more content, which is expected for an early access title
- No achievements or trading cards as yet

Review Summary

Whether or not you like racing, Racing Glider is a game that has good potential and is worth keeping an eye on.
