Project Boost

Review

Project Boost is a brand spanking new fast-paced, third-person shooter. Right off the bat, the game starts on a chaotic rampage without much context.

As I started to progress the game slowly limped together the whole plotline. The way it’s done and presented could’ve been improved. The game had already lost me in its chaotic, fast-paced shooter scenario before I figured out the plotline.

Plot: As you were drifting between sleep and rest, your pet rabbit started to cause mayhem on your desk. You woke up annoyed and found a shocking email on your screen begging to be read.

The email is from Hoi Polloi Technologies, an infamous tech farm that you’ve been trying to get into. The odd email reads, “thank you for applying to the position of Research Assistant”.

You are filled with shock and awe, and don’t know what to expect. But you cannot let this opportunity slip by, so you respond and take the job.

This job is all you hoped for, until reality kicks in.  It turns out that reality is not all glitter and glamor; reality is naked and cruel.

Going after the boss and company is the only way to know for sure what the hell is going on. But there are no easy answers and no one to ask except for the people who are trying to shut you up. But you will not be going down without a fight today, no matter the human cost.

Gameplay: Project Boost presents a fast-paced, third-person shooter and mostly focuses on one particular thing and nothing much else. And that is shoot ‘em up; right off the bat it’s pure death and carnage.

As you progress, Hoi Polloi’s army of guards will appear out of thin air trying to stop you with all their might. With puny little 9mms to hand-held Grenade launchers, no expense is spared trying to knock you down in your tracks.

Your main goal is to reach the boss, trying to unlock one room at a time on a floor.  Each floor can only be unlocked if you clear the rooms full of guards and collect the key card to do the same for all the other rooms.

Simple gameplay, but it took me a little while to get used to it until I figured out that by hitting Q, the game shows you where to go next. After that, it’s pretty straightforward gameplay; just don’t die.

And oh ya, I forgot to mention . . . there are Zombies.

Gunplay: Pretty awkward at the moment, which I believe is the whole point of the game, to have goofy gunplay, but it seems it's not quite there yet.

I think someone turned the goofy gunplay up to 100 and now they are slowly tuning it down to an enjoyable level.

But it works; the guns have an insane amount of bullet spread but it's pretty manageable since there is no recoil. Which worked out fine for Project Boost’s fast-paced run and gun - ‘’almost’’.

Coming to that ‘’almost’’ in a bit.

The game features a pretty awesome assortment of weapons, which I’m pretty glad about, but they really didn’t need to put in this many different guns before fixing all the issues.

Ability wheel: By hitting the middle mouse button you will get to use some of the most unique abilities I have found in a game.  Although it seems like it was supposed to be the star attraction of the game, and it does play an important role, but the game totally missed a good opportunity on this one.

The abilities are cool and workable but very underpowered and the game doesn’t really have any need for these if you're decent at videogames anyways.

Now let's focus on some issues that need to get some dev attention:

- Remember that ‘’almost’’ I left out on the gunplay section; the game has a fun gunplay with a good number of unique weapons but has an unreliable automatic corner cover which is totally ruining it.

- Random dialogues; out of nowhere random dialogues breakout between the boss and my character, or I just blabber to myself, which totally ruins a good moment of immersion.

- During these awkward and annoying dialogue sections, you won’t get to see any cut scenes or anything like that. Oh no, that would be too easy. When the dialogue happens you will be walking heavily, unable to run and unable to shoot, and it was supposed to be a shooter!

- Got stuck on one of one of those dialogue holdups and got into a loop in a toilet; couldn’t finish the game.

World design: Nothing much to say here, but I will give Project Boost this - the rooms and floors were pretty well designed for the type of gameplay they are offering.

Long walkways for some mid-ranged inaccurate shootouts, small rooms for chaotic CQC, and so much more.
