Poly Towns

Review

Have you ever fancied building your own town and thriving community? Poly Towns is a town-building game in which you start in a single zone and progress through others in order to build an expanding town.

You start the game in the center zone in which you're able to build upon; there are nine different zones in total. Within each of the zones there are sixteen sections to build either houses, farms, churches, town halls etc. On some of the sections you’ll find trees and rocks, which, if you want to remove them to make room for some swanky new house or anything else you’d like, it’ll cost you a few pennies.

You have a certain amount of money to get you started on building your new town. Start by building some houses so you have somewhere for the villagers to live which will also bring in taxes to keep your town moving forward. Your new villagers will need jobs to keep them occupied, and this in turn will bring in much needed money and resources to further build your town. You can also upgrade each of your buildings, so you have more resources at your disposal. You can build a market to bring in a few more pennies. You are unable to sell anything you build, but you can move them to a free section or even to a different unlocked zone.

There are a few jobs which you can give the villagers and each place of work will have to be built. There’s the farmers, who will give food to keep your villagers fed. There’s the woodcutters and miners, who will give you building materials. You can assign up to three homes to each workplace to bring in those much-needed resources; having them nearby to the homes will get them in quicker.

You have also got to keep your town folk happy; if their happiness runs down to zero then it’s game over. It’s also game over if you run out of money or food, so you must manage your resources, making sure you’re always in the plus on resources as they’ll soon dwindle as your town grows. To keep your town folks happy, you must build them parks and churches.

To expand into another zone you must build a town hall in the first zone and acquire 5,000 coins to unlock your second zone, 10,000 for the third then 15,000 for the fourth and so on. There are a couple of goals to achieve, which are to reach a population of 1,000 and to reach a total of 100,000 coins.

There’s the usual options, graphics, sound and game keys. The graphics are nice and come with a few graphical options like resolution, fps (no limit or 60), visual effects, shadows, vsync etc. As for audio, there’s sound effects, ambience and game sounds when zoomed in to the map. If you’re like me and you like to remap your game keys, you won’t be able to do that from the usual wasd etc.
