One Shift

Review

Oneshift is a puzzle platformer game from Mazen Games where you freeze and unfreeze time while switching between worlds and cuboids as to make your way safely to collect the blue cubes.

To start the game, press “Play”, and you’ll be greeted with a grid of boxes (8x9), and at the bottom another 10, to give a total of 82. Each one of the boxes is a level; once you beat one, then the next level will be available for you. On the right-hand side you have six characters for you to select and play as; you start with only one character, but as you progress through beating more and more levels, you’ll unlock five more. I haven’t seen any benefit from having one character over another, so your choice is just down to personal preference. The levels are fairly easy to start with, getting slightly harder as you progress.

On each level you have a number of blue cubes to collect; collecting all of them will end that level and allow you access to the next. To collect the blue cubes, you’ll have to solve the puzzle of how to reach to them. To do this you have find a pathway to them, which at first glance looks impossible as you only have certain cuboids around and none within reach of the blue cubes. There are so many worlds on each level which you can switch between, but only one world can be active at a time, and each with different kinds of cuboids to aid you. Switching between the worlds at the start of each level will give you an idea of how you’ll tackle said level.

There are different types of cuboids, such as jump cuboids (which will boost you in the air to reach higher places), and teleport cuboids (which will teleport you from one position to another).  The red ones you don’t want to touch as they’ll kill you. Some cuboids can be moved around and placed where you think they’re needed. You’re able to rotate around each level to give you access to the areas that you may not be able to see, or to check on whether you’re close enough for a jump etc. On later levels you’ll also be able to rotate the different worlds, which brings another level of difficulty to the game.

Additionally, you can freeze and unfreeze time, which is needed when you have to switch to another world. For example, you want to jump to a cuboid on another world, so you jump, freeze time, then choose the world you require and then unfreeze time, so you land on that cuboid.

Options consists of Graphics settings (Low to Ultra), Resolution, Frame Rate Limit, Post Processing and Full Screen, Audio settings, Music and Effects Volume, Pitch music when manipulating time. There are eleven languages to choose from. There are Controls which allow you to remap key binds on the keyboard, but sadly not for game pads. They do provide a button layout for both Sony and Xbox pads.  Playing with a game pad seems to be the best way to play this game. There is also an option for Isometric movement
