Nightfall Hacker

Review

Having enjoyed SPYBOTICS: THE NIGHTFALL INCIDENT, I was very much looking forward to Nightfall Hacker. Developed and published by Teradile, Nightfall Hacker is an interesting turned-based hackathon game.

The game encourages you to plan, hack and fight your way against rogue softwares. The game progresses through multiple levels and sub-levels as you crack down on countless malicious software, virus, and all sorts of nasty digital buggers.

Plot: A freelance White hat hacker is on the first day of his job, accepting paid ethical hacking and cybersecurity consultant jobs. On the first day on the job the owner of the server, a farm owner, lets him go for a warm-up run on his SSH server.

Having eliminated all the issues, our protagonist is all fueled up for more and more intense cyber challenges.

Gameplay: Nightfall Hacker is one of those easy-to-learn, hard-to-master kind of deals, where the game seemingly starts off easy, but as you progress things get very interesting.

The gameplay is very simple and only uses your left mouse button and the full cell power of your brain.

The game lets you counter malicious programs with your own trusty anti-malware programs. In the beginning, you will only be using two basic programs – 1. Hack, a basic attack program, and 2. Sling Shot, a basic range-based attack program.

As you progress you will be unlocking more and more anti-malware programs and you will be able to upgrade them using the money you're earning via your freelance contracts.

The game plays like a game of chess and your main goal is to slowly but surely cut down all the malware as you discover them by using your own programs.

Simply select the program you would like to start your attack with and place your first move. And since this game feels and plays out like a game of chess, it’s advisable to be careful and plan your attacks. Sometimes not being aggressive is the key to victory.

Cut down the movement and spread of the malware, eventually cornering and destroying it. But some malware may prove stronger than others and you may need to fallback, upgrade and go for another run.

Game design: The game seemingly went for a classic early 2000-ish UI look. I found it rather charming in its own way but it played out quite sluggishly.

Could definitely be improved with more polishing; the overall in-game UI, visuals, and animations felt very much unfinished.

Music and sound effects: Nothing really special here to grab your attention or boost your experience while playing, but there is also nothing to complain about.
