Miner Meltdown

Review

So, let’s check our equipment, shall we? We have pickaxes, dynamite, guns . . . flamethrowers . . .  bazookas. . .  Are you sure we need those? I thought we’re going to dig for gold and diamonds. What? There is another group of four miners that will enter this mine at the same time as us. On second thoughts, what else can we take?  It’s OUR gold and specious stones and I’m sure they’re thinking what we’re thinking. It’s going to be a Miner Meltdown!

Miner Meltdown is an action /online co-op game where you and three other players (or bots) will face another group of four opponents in fun and fast battles through randomly generated mines.

There are three types of modes in Miner Meltdown. In Diamond Dash, you collect diamonds by killing mutants and opponents and make your way to the drop zone to score points. In Deathmatch, you’ll receive ten points each time you kill an opponent and three points when you eliminate a mutant. In those two modes, the team who accumulates the most points will win the battle. In the Crazy King mode, you and your teammates have to be in the king zone to score points; you can’t miss it, a large blue circle which moves around the mine. The first team to reach one hundred and fifty points will win the round.

You can join or host a game. As the host, you can select the duration of the game. It could be five minutes (or less), twenty minutes, or even a few hours if you wish. Plenty of fun if you play with a group of mates.  You can also customize your miner by selecting one of several skins available before starting a game. Additional skins will be unlock as you level up.

In terms of the game play, it’s fast and really fun; either you play online with your mates or against bots. You can select the bots’ level of difficulty (easy, medium or hard) when you setup the game. At the end of your wagon ride, you’ll be greeted by a character who will show you what he as under his coat . . . and by that, I mean weapons, guns, machine guns, flamethrowers, grenades and other great goodies. You will be allocated a certain amount of gold before entering the mine and I would advise you to choose your items carefully.  The mines will have existing paths to follow but as a true miner, you’ll start digging your own path with a view to collecting gold which you can use to purchase new weapons or equipment when you see the man in the long coat. You’ll be given five coins each time you manage to collect gold nuggets. You might find additional gold when you find and open a chest. However, you’ll probably receive additional weapons and gadgets rather than gold. With all that digging going on, you’ll still have to fight the miners from the other team.  Great fun!

Graphically, the pixel artwork is well done but I must admit that I am not a fan of the soundtrack. I find it pretty annoying. The good news is that you can disable it. Control-wise, I preferred the keyboard and mouse option which gave me better gameplay.

Positives

+ Good pixel artwork
+ Randomly generated mines
+ Fast and fun gameplay
+ Miners customization and skins to unlock
+ Achievements

Negatives

- Not a good soundtrack
