Looterkings

Review

Deep in the darkest dungeon, they’re all waiting for you! All you can see behind the curtains back stage is hundreds of red, almond-shaped eyes. This is it - the curtain opens and you know it’s your time to shine! You walk onto the middle of the stage with your incredible goblin smile, looking straight at the audience. Then comes the outburst, “LET’S LOOT EVERTHING IN OUR PATH!” The horde went wild, “WE ARE THE LOOTERKINGS!”

Looterkings is a co-op dungeon crawler where you control one of four funky goblins. Your goal is to clear dungeons, loot and make your way up to the surface to the ultimate prize, which is to reach the sacred halls of the Elven Queen.

On the main menu, you’ll be able to join or host a game. Before you do so, head up to the lootery option and choose one of the four skins available to you. By hosting a game, you can choose to play by yourself, in the event that none of your friends are able to play with you. If you do, it will take a good hour or so to level up and to accumulate enough treasure with a view to purchasing better weapons and armour at the merchant store. It’s fun, challenging, and it will take you several attempts to reach the first mini boss. It’s a lot more fun when you play with your mates, but don’t expect to have an easy run.

The gameplay is cool; you have to clear rooms of enemies on your way to the elevator to go to the next level up. You’ll get additional gems if you’re successful, too. The interesting aspect about the opponent in each of the chambers is that they’ll respawn at least once, and occasionally twice, before being exterminated. There are over thirty-five different enemies, including bosses. Some of them will have melee weapons and others will throw projectiles which are mostly magic spells. Let me tell you, it’s so much fun when they come at you in huge numbers. Make sure to smash wooden boxes, pots and pin-point the big chests, as they hold plenty of loot. Then, when you have enough gold and have levelled-up several times you might be able to purchase better weapons and armour at the store. Oh, I nearly forgot to talk about the mushrooms! As you fight your way through the chambers, you’ll definitely going to receive damage and yes, the answer to returning your goblins to maximum health is to eat some mushrooms. But not all of them are good for you! There is a certain kind of mushroom to avoid; the ones with funny spots, as they can kill you instantly, or make you feel sleepy and we don’t need that in battle. However, if the health gauge is at its maximum, you can collect and throw them to your enemy, inflicting damage. The other way to inflict greater damage is when you trigger the beserker mode. To do so, you’ll have to successfully hit fifteen enemies in a short period of time and then it will last for around ten seconds.

Graphically the game looks good and runs fine. There’s a good number of weapons and costumes to unlock. In terms of controls, they’re fine but I must admit it’s not that easy to aim if you use the crossbows or staffs. The other downside, there are not many online games at this stage, which is a bit of a shame because it is a fun game to play.

+ Fun CO-OP game
+ Good replay-ability

Negatives

- No trading cards
- Aim when using a crossbow and staff could have been better

Review Summary

Call your goblin mates, loot as much as you can, cover your rudey bits and make your way to the sacred halls of the Elven Queen! Cool CO-OP game!
