Kingdom Rush Vengeance - Tower Defense

Review

Kingdom Rush Vengeance is a fantasy medieval tower defense game with a strong taste of RPG mixed in. Right off the bat, I noticed how well the minor plot plays out with its unique Tower Defense gameplay.

Lord Vez’nen has returned and seeks revenge against those who have wronged him. He assembles an army of defenders who will do his bidding, starting small with little armour and reach.  As Lord Vez’nen progresses and loots more gold, he starts building up his defenses and ranking up his army with stronger and more capable men and heroes. Soon he will have his revenge and conquer the lands he seeks.

Gameplay: Kingdom Rush Vengeance’s fantasy medieval elements play out well with its Tower Defense gameplay. Early on the base gameplay will consist of 4 unique of towers – Shadow Archers, Orc Warrior Den, Infernal Meg & Goblin Rocket Riders.

Each tower begins with 3 attributes and its own unique benefits. Each upgrade during defense will improve the state of each tower.

There are no descriptions about the downsides to each tower, but during your session with the selected 4-5 towers, you will notice their shortcomings and start to prefer one over another.

In total, there are 18 unique towers to choose from.  While each tower has its own unique qualities, some seem to be better built than others.  It seems, though, that it’s less about the state of the towers and more about which type of defense you prefer.

Tower Upgrades:  Each tower is able to take on a limited number of upgrades in exchange for gold during gameplay. With every upgrade, the towers will change in appearance, gaining a strong and menacing look along with an increase in damage and reach.

Heroes: The game currently houses 13 unique heroes, each of whom has their own unique skill set, animations, visuals, and minor voice acting. You will start off with the hero Veruk, a well-balanced hero for beginners with the only downside being slow movement.

As you progress you will unlock more and better heroes.  I did find that some heroes, while appearing stronger than others on paper, actually perform very poorly during combat.

Upgrades Menu:  In addition to the Tower and Hero menu, there is another menu with four different upgrade trees. Each tree has its own purpose, but during gameplay there is no visual evidence of having upgraded a tree.

Encyclopedia: This is a great touch which every game should have, in my opinion!  A great visual representation showing each tower’s upgrade. Although I ignored this feature in the beginning, later on this encyclopedia turned out to be very helpful for choosing which tower to use and when.

Art Style: Visuals, Kingdom Rush Vengeance – Tower Defense brings in an amazing 2D fantasy art style. With unique art style and vibrant colours, I must say it kept my attention for hours.

Sound effects:  These sound great and are appropriate for the theme of the game, but they did get repetitive after playing for a few hours, so I turned it down.

Enemies: You will be facing attacks from multiple types of enemy units from each faction. Each faction is bound to each appropriately themed region, is well-designed and keeps the gameplay fresh for hours. Each has its own set of skills, states, and their own unique style of attack.
