Kamikaze Veggies

Review

Well, here you are, the strongest species on earth, having managed to destroy itself with ongoing mushroom fireworks! Thousands of years after the event, a new species has become the predominant one to walk on what was left of the planet earth. It’s the veggies, but due to extreme temperatures, some of the veggies have become nasty and eager for power. Joseph Pommodorov, the tomato, is one of them! He’s managed to brainwash all the red vegetables and turn them against the others. The only vegetables that stand up to him and his army are known as the Kamikaze Veggies! But to become a Kamikaze Veggie, you must get through thorough training and be ready to kiss your little veggie bottom goodbye if necessary! Only then will you become part of this unique group of soldiers known as the Kamikaze Veggies.

Kamikaze Veggies is a third-person action/puzzle game developed and self-published by Red Limb Studio on the 8th of July 2022 on the Steam Platform.

The game consists of a tutorial and 12 missions. After a fun introduction, your first goal is to become part of the Kamikaze Veggies group. This short tutorial will show you how to become the sour cream of the Kamikaze Veggies. When you are done, the real missions to get rid of Joseph Pommodorov will begin. I am smiling as I write this because each mission that I have played so far made me smile all the way through.

So, each mission is ranked by three golden stars, based on a certain number of points you have to reach. If you achieve or surpass the highest points requirement, you’ll achieve three golden stars. All of the missions have specific targets to complete to move to the next one. You will also have puzzles to solve, but most of the ones that I have experienced so far are easy to figure out. Even so, the gameplay is really fun and addictive.  At the start of each mission, you’ll be given a certain number of points that you can use. So, let’s say that you have 1000 points on hand; with these points, you can purchase eight different units. Bear in mind that when you start the game, you only have access to one main unit and one secondary unit. There are four main and four secondary units in this game and each one will unlock when you acquire a certain number of golden stars. The difference between the main and secondary units is that the secondary units have a timer and when it reaches one minute, they will explode.  You can select up to eight units in total per mission. When you are satisfied with your selection, you can launch the mission.

As mentioned, each mission will have a few objectives to complete. The main issue is that none of your units will spawn (or in this case, parachute) into the level with any weapons at their disposal. But don’t despair, you’ll find weapons such as grenades, mines, shovels and of course the ultimate attack . . . Kamikaze! All in all, this game is more stealth than action. And yes, you will use the kamikaze attack several times. For instance, it’s the only attack to destroy the main objective, and you will need to use it in other places that I’ll let you discover.

I was quite surprised by the game for several reasons. First, the graphics are pretty good and the game runs very well. I loved the groovy 1970s surfing music (introduction only) and the game made me smile as I played each mission.  It is well done, and the story is truly out of this world; really fun. Great price and worth every penny. You can play this game with your mouse and keyboard or with a gamepad. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t support Steam cloud, which is a bit of a shame.
