HexTrains

Review

Choo-Choo! Take to the tracks of ever more complexity while destroying the onslaught of trains and their coloured cargo. Strategically place your towers while always thinking ahead to the next wave.

HexTrains is a tower defence/puzzle game where trains pull along carriages with different coloured cargo containers (Red, Yellow, Blue, and Green). Each of these containers can only be destroyed by the same coloured towers. Each of the towers can be upgraded but not all the time; it depends on the track version. There are two to four different versions of each track. Usually, the first version is of one colour with no upgrading available, after the first version you’ll encounter more than one colour and be able to upgrade your towers. You will also be able to buy towers partially or fully upgraded towers.

The tracks seem rather easy at first, but they can become complicated very fast, especially with multiple coloured cargo and the fact that not all tracks have an exit point like in most tower games. As with all train lines they have track switches which allow you to change tracks and create loops for your trains to avoid colliding with each other, and to guide you to the appropriate coloured turrets. If they do collide and hold each other up, you’ll have 8 seconds to get them moving, otherwise you’ll lose health and it will possibly be game-over, depending on how big of a hold-up you have.

When placing your towers, you can only build on flat tiles and each tower must have at least one space between them. You’ll have to strategically place your towers because of the assorted colours; some containers will be stacked upon another container of another colour. So, when this happens you’ll have to destroy the container on top before getting to the containers underneath. Switch the trains to another track, where the towers match the colour of your container, then send them on to another track, on so on and so forth.

There are a few options to choose from: Audio, Graphics, Game and Language, and you have eight different profiles to save your progress. The profiles also show you a summary of your progress, such as games played, kills, total score, performance, rating, victories and awards.

There are fifty-eight tracks with multiple versions to keep you occupied, as well as four difficulty levels.  Your scores will be recorded on a leaderboard. The graphics come with resolution, gamma and vsync; the resolution options are limited to 14440x810, 1366x768, 1280x720, 1136x640 windowed mode. It’s limited to these resolutions because the game was originally designed for smaller screens, but you can Alt + Enter for full screen.
