Guns Gore and Cannoli 2

Review

It’s 1944 and the European War theatre is entering its last phase. Nonetheless, the greatest gangster in America, Vinnie Cannoli, found himself tied up on a chair in the middle of a warehouse somewhere downtown. His kidnappers are about to deliver him to the Dark Don. “Who the hell would call himself the Dark Don?” thought Vinnie. “Oh, forget about it! I’ll show this Dark Don who is Vinnie Cannoli. All I need is guns, gore and Cannoli, my favourite dessert”.

Guns, Gore and Cannoli 2 is a fast paced action packed platformer game where you take control of a gangster named Vinnie Cannoli.

This sequel takes place towards the end of the World War II around 15 years after Vinnie was the sole survivor of Thugtown where he battles against a horde of Zombies (human and rats), mobsters and police forces. This time around, our tough gangster will first need to escape a warehouse from well-armed gangs of mobsters. Then, he will face Zombies and American forces back in Thugtown, and even take part in D-Day on the beaches of Normandy fighting the Nazis.

The gameplay is absolutely frantic on the single player as well as on the local co-op mode. I haven’t had the change to try the online multiplayer mode but I would assume that it’s exactly the same. In terms of difficulty for all the modes, you have four different options, from easy to impossible, when you start a new game. You also have the ability to access previous stages and upgrade the difficulty level.

I really like the cartoon graphics, and the comical aspects of this game are everywhere; you have gangsters eating pizza and Nazis taking selfies before shooting at Vinnies. Funny quotations all way through and several great cut scenes which will give you a few giggles, especially when Vinnie is talking with his Italian-Americano accent.  Another few things I really appreciate is the architecture, which accurately represent the era in America, and a few buildings in Germany. Vinnie has access to an extensive arsenal which he will be able to collect from his fallen enemies as he eliminates them. All the famous German and American World War II Guns are well replicated in this game: The MP40 Sub Machine Gun, MG44 machine guns and plenty of others are available in order for Vinnie to move forward. Mind you, if you prefer the conventional baseball bat, feel free to use it, but Vinnie might find that it’s not as effective against a Panzerfaust or Bazooka in English. Personally, I really enjoyed the Flamethrower, the Tommy gun and the chain saw. Marvellous gore! Vinnie will constantly be injured and you’ll need to make sure he has plenty of his favourite dessert to regenerate his health . . . you guessed it, cannoli.

Story-wise, I’ll let you discover who is Dark Don and why he desperately wants Vinnie in Germany!

Great cartoon-style graphics, with the controls that are really responsive, either with a gamepad or a mouse and keyboard. Personally, I strongly recommend the gamepad, as I find it easier to play this game. The soundtrack is also superb, with great music from the era and suspense themes as well, depending on which level you are on. This game is very well put together and runs well! The only negative point is that it might become a bit repetitive after a while.
