Goodbye My King

Review

Being a King can be a cut-throat business. You have to make sure that the people of your kingdom are well-fed, have plenty of entertainment, and that they worship your strength when you conquer new territories. However, you can’t please them all; there are always people who watch closely every step you take in the eventuality that you make a fatal mistake.   And you just made one . . . Goodbye My King!

Goodbye My King is an action / puzzle / stealth game where you take control of the booted king who has to recover gem fragments from his old royal chambers, and reconstitute the three gems on his crown to claim back the throne.

As you land on the main menu, you’ll be welcomed by a soldier who’s sharpening his sword sitting alone in one of the castle room. From here, you’ll be able to choose one of the nine languages available and select to play the first level of the three chapters available. Each chapter has five stages to clear, and the aim is to successfully stealth gem fragments located in the royal chambers until you reconstruct a stone. When you finish each chapter, the reconstructed gem will be placed back on your crown.

However, it won’t be as simple as you would expect. First, you have to find your way into the castle which in some stages can be interesting; just remember where your parents used to hide the front key to the house when you were a tadpole (that’s a great hint). Then, you need to search every single room for useful items to get you into the royal chambers. On top of that, you have to make sure that the imposter king doesn’t see you or he will bash you up if he manages to catch up with you. But that’s not all, he has soldiers at his disposal and they too can grab you and throw you out of the castle. You’ll find hints here and there in the form of paper drawings which will show you where to go and what to do. As you progress to another level, you’ll find the castle with more rooms and floors. In regards to the puzzles, they are pretty simple.

Graphically the games looks good. I think that the controls need to be better especially when you try to interact with objects in front of you, and the AI could also be better. There are a few bugs, but bear in mind that this game is currently an early access. However, I did enjoy the first five levels. It was fun to try to avoid the imposter King and steal fragments from his bedroom.

+ Nice graphics
+ Fun and easy to play
+ Combination of stealth, action and puzzles
+ Well-designed levels
+ Achievements

Negatives

- Few bugs here and there
- Controls need to be tweaked a bit
- No trading cards
