Figment

Review

The mind is one of the most important functions of each individual. Everything is happening up there for every one of us.  It allows you to daydream, to enter endless conversations about anything and everything. It’s a huge memory box between a pair of ears where all knowledge is stored. Some information can create fear, anxiety or nightmares and needs to be washed away. That’s when you need to call on Dusty, the chaser of bad dreams, to eliminate them once and for all. Let’s enter the world of Figment!

Figment is an adventure/ puzzle / action game where you take control of a charming creature; a sort of rabbit named Dusty.

At the start of the game, you’ll hear a conversation between a child and her parents in a car. Then you’ll hear a big boom! From here, you’ll enter the charming world of Figment. Your character will be relaxing on a rocking chair (sleeping) holding onto his scrapbook, and will be woken up by his friend, Piper the bird. A drink will be located on a nearby table, but Dusty will want some ice to make it fresh. This first quest is basically a small tutorial. As soon as you get back, you’ll discover that your scrapbook was taken by a strange black and purple creature – which is called a nightmare - and you want to take it back.  It won’t be easy, though.

Dusty will have to solve puzzles, eliminate enemies with his wooden sword and defeat a few bosses to reach the ultimate nightmare. The puzzles are fairly simple and involve picking up coloured batteries, metal discs, gears, levers, moving squares, as well as reproducing sequences. In battles, Dusty will have only two forms of attacks; the normal attack (single sword swing) and the power up attack (hold the button on your mouse or gamepad for a few seconds to inflict more damage to your enemies). They are a few types of opponents in this game and each time Dusty eliminates one of them a few white spheres will appeared at that spot. They’ll go towards the white gauge and as soon as the gauge is filled it will give you additional health, which is represented by a green gauge. Dusty can also find green spheres within the world to regenerate his health. There are memories to collect within the mind, represented by pink spheres.

What I really like is the artwork. The world is beautiful, full of colours, and each area of the mind looks different. Guitars and trumpets are lying on the path playing music. The soundtrack is great, too, and you’ll be entertained with a few songs before entering into battle with bosses. Control-wise, they are responsive either with the mouse and keyboard or gamepad.

Positives

+ Beautiful artwork
+ Interesting concept
+ Nice soundtrack
+ Easy to play
+ Achievements and trading cards

Negatives

- Too few enemies
- Puzzles could have been harder

Review Summary

Figment is an interesting concept setup in a beautiful mind world.
