Fat Kid

Review

You are sitting in the school cafeteria eating your lunch, just as you do every day, when a student starts picking on you about going to the prom. They mock you, saying you should ask out the most popular girl in school, who you really think is just the most dreamy girl in the world. Then the jock comes along; he sees your gaze cast upon her, and as with every other time, he moves in to beat you down. But today is not like every other day; you have had enough of the abuse and you fight back against the entire school that has treated you so poorly. So begins the Fat Kid’s Adventure!

The game is the 7th release by Developer, Almighty Games. It was released in June 2018 on Steam as a Early Access title. It is tagged as a 2D, Hack & Slash, but in truth it should be labeled as a “Brawler,” as there is no hack and slash to the title. You punch, kick, stomp, barrel roll, belly bump and fart your way through your battle in High School. Your body is now your greatest strength against all the students in school, as the role of being bullied is reversed.

Fat Kid has a very funny comic book-like art style, and graphically it’s done well. From characters to animations for attacks and destructible environments, it all looks very nice and flows well in the game. It has a tutorial area where you set up your keybinds and learn the basics of gameplay; it takes but a minute and you're playing. The game has a total of 4 different difficulty settings, so it can be enjoyed by those wanting casual gameplay as well as those wanting a hardcore experience, or anywhere in between. The progressive skills means you can master your favorite moves and powers at a faster rate, just by using them.

The game has a nice rock-themed soundtrack, comprising 5 original tracks, with fair sound effects (could use some work) and a great cast of enemies all out to beat you up. The game has full controller support, so play it your way, with a keyboard or a controller. The controls work very smoothly and with only 3 keys to use besides the standard wsad movement keys, it will not take long to get used to using all the characters attacks. There are standard punch and kick attacks, as well as special attacks (which require energy to use). Using your special attacks, you can destroy some of the worlds environment to gain health, energy and coins that you will use to continue the game should you be beaten up. There are 9 levels of action with a boss fight & a score summary at the end of every level.

Fat Kid is a fun little brawler; the core of the game is finished and the title is expected to be out of early access soon. Many language localizations are already in place, with more coming with future updates, along with some expected animation updates. There is currently only a Story Mode for the game. There is a possible MP/Co-op update planned: it would be a great addition to the title and increase it’s worthiness in one's library. The game launcher is already set up for these parts of the games to be added. So I have high hopes for the features to be included at Full Release.

I have enjoyed my time playing Fat Kid. As brawlers of the past, it promises lots of action with variable enemy difficulties. I must admit farting in my enemies’ faces, then turning around to beat them up was my favorite part of the title!  I love unique and interesting art in games, collecting them avidly, and really appreciated the great artwork in this one. The game has an average amount of replay-ability. I can see me re-visiting the title from to time to have a fart-fest, belly bumping battle through high school once again. If Co-op is added then replay value of the title would be much higher. I really have nothing bad to say about the title. For an Early Access Title, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the game. The current asking price of $10.00 USD is almost fair; I believe it could be lowered by a couple dollars (try to catch a sale). If MP/Co-op features are added, I believe it would then be worth the current asking price.

Note: I would like the user interface color theme altered just a bit; I am colorblind, and found it a little difficult to see which area was highlighted in the color selection interface.

So now it is your time to decide: Are You Going to be Bullied or become the Bully!
