Disturbed: Beyond Aramor

Review

Every choice you make will take you on an adventure filled with mystery for you to uncover . . . where will yours take you?

In Disturbed: Beyond Aramor, you play as Gabriel who’s been exiled to Greylock Island from his hometown since he was a young boy, but he has no recollection as to why. Because of living in exile away from family and friends he become depressed and doesn’t really care about much, wanting to waste his days away.

Your adventure starts with you at your home where you wake up to the sun coming through the window, and this is where your choices start. Do you just turn over and go back to sleep wallowing in your deep depression, or do you jump out of bed with a spring in your step? Maybe someone will be banging on your door; will you answer it? The choice is yours.

The choice you make from scene to scene will depend on how your adventure unfolds. There are many ways in which to take your adventure, from which route to take, to whether or not you should you help someone; there can be consequences to the actions you take. These actions will either help you in your quest or possibly lead to an untimely death, which can happen often, but don’t let that worry you as you’ll come back . . . or maybe you won’t; even in death you have a choice to make.

There’s many ways to uncover plots in your journey; even though you may have been to a place before, don’t expect the same outcome as your previous visit. Depending on your route, or what you have uncovered, your outcome will be changed accordingly and will lead to multiple game endings, as well as adding to the replay value of the game.

Each of the scenes is hand drawn with atmospheric touches like moving fog, wind and sounds which are nicely done and bring a unique and pleasant feel to the game. You’re able to inspect items like chests and keys etc which will give you information, clues, weapons, potions and more to aid you through the game. Check everywhere and not just the once, as sometimes things don’t show when first looked upon.

Combat within the game is decided by which weapons or items you have found along your way. When in combat you are given options to parry or cleave, to use certain items like wands, picks, swords, shields, and to choose the right time to block, parry or cleave.  There are also potions which will aid you and will automatically be used when and if they are needed while you’re fighting.

You’ll also come across others on your journey, with whom you’ll interact. Some of them will join your party, which will help when in combat, or give you missions to complete, which can earn you some sort of reward. Some will turn on you; it’s up to you to decide if you trust someone or not and what action you want to take. You can also choose to go on your own if you so wish.

Preferences consist of the usual things like full or windowed, text speed, skip, sounds and music volume. You can play using either keyboard, mouse or gamepad, the choice is yours. You’re also able to calibrate your gamepad. There’s plenty of room for saving the game, in total 66 slots (54 for manual saving, 6 for automatic saving and 6 for quick saves) so you’re able to save whenever you want and if needed you can overwrite any previous saves you’ve made.
