Destroy All Humans! 2 - Reprobed

Review

Well, where do I start, humans? First, Cryptosporidium 137 died, but before doing so, he cloned himself to Crypto 138, which now has a purer Furon DNA and has taken over the white house as the . . .  I can’t remember which number was next, but he took over the body of the American President. Amazingly, the KGB discovered it and launched a missile strike on the Furon mothership which was happily on standby in earth’s orbit. The strike was successful and blew the spaceship into pieces. Thankfully, Crypto 138’s boss, Orthopox 13 or Pox for short, managed to save essential Datacores before impact. Well, here you are Crypto 138, and your adventure starts in the lovely American Bay City in Destroy All Humans! 2 – Reprobed.

Destroy All Humans! 2 – Reprobed is a third-person adventure /action game developed by
Black Forest Games and published by THQ Nordic on the 31st of August 2022 on the Steam platform. The game is also available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. This is the remastered version of the original game, which was released on the 17th of October 2006.

In this second adventure, Crypto will be visiting Bay City in America (which has been overwhelmed by hippies), London (which is also full of hippies but with a strange accent), and Takoshima Island (home of Ninjas and other gangs), along with a quick dash to the old Soviet Union and a trip to a secret base on the moon.

Our favourite Alien that sounds just like Jack Nicholson will take his mission from NPCs in each location. Most of them will be from Pox and the hot Russian Spy Natalya, who Crypto is very fond of. Several other NPCs offer side missions in all locations. The story is very good with plenty of humour.

My favourite part is the gameplay; I had so much fun inflicting pain on the pitiful human race. Crypto will start with one weapon in hand, the Zap-O-Matic, and it is just like being struck by lightning. The Ion Detonator is fun, too.  But I couldn’t pass the Anal Probe, it just kept me entertained all way through the game! Seeing hippies, cops, soldiers, and KGB agents running like chickens with their hands firmly stuck on their derrière and saying one-liners such as “all the way to Russia” was hilarious. However, you can only start probing people when you reach England, and being French, that suited me perfectly.

In total, Crypto will have nine different weapons. However, I had only unlocked eight by the time I’d finished the game. He also has powers that you’ll be using all the time. Crypto has the power to ask people to follow him, and he can also body snatch, which is taking over a human for a certain time. For the body snatch to be successful, it has to be done without being seen by other humans. If he is spotted, people will start running toward a phone box to call the police or call for reinforcements. If you are quick enough, you can use the forget power on those people and voila! You need to be careful to make sure you do not raise the alarm meter to the colour red. Otherwise, you’ll have the cops, agents and military personnel, including tanks, on your tail until the meters cool down. The only way for Crypto to do that is to fly away using his jetpack and hide for a while. In some missions, you’ll have to use the cortex power on people to find the location of a specific individual that you must eliminate. These types of missions will usually get you across the city, which is good because there are plenty of collectables to find in this game. I must mention that I hadn’t died too many times playing this game, as you can just fly away and get your health back up by waiting on roofs for a while. Yes, Crypto can hoverskate to get away too, but the best way is to use the airways to avoid dying.

Bosses fights are where I died a few times, but it was later into the game when I started fighting the other Alien race, the Blisks. It took me a while to pass them, but apart from that, it was smooth sailing.

Some of the missions will involve using your flying saucer, but there are not too many of them, which disappointed me. The other thing you need to know is that you will not be able to use the Gene Blender immediately as you need to reach England (Albion) before you can use it, and it is the only way to upgrade your Psi powers.

In terms of upgrading both Crypto and his flying saucer’s weapons, it is all based on Furon cells. Each time you finish a mission, you’ll be awarded Furon cells. Most of the time, you’ll receive green cells, but in some missions, you’ll also receive blue ones. Each weapon has two categories: Strength and Quantity. With the green cells, you can upgrade each category twice per weapon. Remember that the cost of green cells will increase each time you upgrade a weapon. But to fully upgrade each category per weapon, you must pay with one blue cell. If you successfully complete the main and all the side tasks per mission, you will also unlock skins for Crypto and for his flying saucer. You can refer to the fabulous gamepedia at any time during the game to see what skins you now have, or what you’re missing, to unlock the other ones.

As I mentioned above, there are plenty of collectables to find in each of the locations. One of them is Furon green cell canisters which are helpful for upgrading your weapons. The others are posters, vinyl discs and artworks. You can also unlock all the saucer landing zones by finding the all-mighty Arkvoodle relics.

Fabulous graphics and soundtrack. The voice-overs are good, and I believe from the original cast. It’s full of humour, you’ll have a lot of giggles and smiles. I had a few unfortunate crashes to the desktop, which annoyed me and affected my final score. However, it is a great remake and a must-have.
