Death Fungeon

Review

Surviving this dungeon will require stealth, fast reflexes and, in spots, nerves of steel. Traversing the world in order to escape, you must make it past guards, puzzling traps and an environment that means to help you reach an early demise. With multiple paths, you will speed run, jump, and parkour your way to collect the treasures and escape the dungeon. When possible, sneak past sleeping guards and observe patrolling guards’ patterns, then dash to hide so they do not know you’re even there. The path ahead will be difficult; you will have victories and failures. Are your platforming skills honed enough to make it to the end?

Death Fungeon is the second release on Steam in August 2018 by developer Ritual Games.
It is tagged as an indie, adventure, retro, difficult, pixel graphic title, which describes the game perfectly. It is set in a 2D semi-linear world. There are multiple ways to pass through levels, so it is not totally linear.  You get an old-school feel, very nice pixel graphics and a basic modern upbeat score. The controls are basic. WASD with a jump and a hide button; you can play with the keyboard or controller. There is full controller support.

The game is well designed, and the dungeons laid out well. You can choose the most direct routes, climbing ladders, using jump pads or parkour up walls. Trying to get all the treasures on the way will require using your wits and parkour skills. Some guards are sleeping, and therefore occasionally easy to sneak by. But wake one guard and the horn alerts all the guards and they proceed to hunt you down. There are well-placed cauldrons that you can hide in placed around the maps as you progress; utilize them to your advantage.

I found the game fairly easy at first and rather casual in gameplay. But as you progress, the action gets much more difficult.  I did appreciate this, as it lets you warm up to the action. The platforming is a lot of fun and took me back to years gone by.  I admit that I generally play more modern titles, so some old-school gameplay is welcome from time to time, and this one definitely fits the bill! I loved the graphics; being in pixel graphics they are done extremely well. I have a hard time seeing some of the pixel graphics that are out now, as my sight has gotten worse as I have gotten older. But this one is done beautifully, and visually, it’s perfect for the title.

So now it’s your time to decide: do you have the skills to survive the Death Fungeon!
