Creepy Road

Review

Flint is what you would call an ordinary truck driver. He picks up goods from one place and drives 100’s of kilometres to deliver it to another place. This time around, his load is pickled sardines, and there is nothing fishy about it. This is his last load of the day before going home to the love of his life, the sweet Angelina. Out of nowhere, an angry bear riding a monocycle crashes into his truck head on! The force of the impact throws Flint head first towards its wind screen. The last thing he remembers after kissing the glass is the bear (as well as pigs and clowns) running on the road waving weapons in their paws and hands! How is he going to go home? It’s going to be one Creepy Road!

Creepy Road is a platformer game where you take control of Flint the truck driver, who has to save the love of his life, the sweet Angelina, from the evil Koala named Lucky!

This game is so much fun to play and quite challenging too. Flint will have to go through forests, towns and sewers, find his way up to the top of buildings as well as ride a rocket in the sky with one hand while holding a Kalashnikov in the other, shooting at upcoming crazy birds and flying elephants that burp poisoned speech bubbles.

There are plenty of funny enemies in this game; the bear on the monocycle, the machine-gunner cows, the flying panda bears, and the pigs armed with a leg of ham, are really funny. All other enemies are related to circus characters (armed clowns, flame throwers and more), animals and infected people with guns. Flint will start each level with a gun in hand and unlimited ammunition. The gun is good but it will take him a lot of shots to kill the bear on the monocycle, for example. Don’t despair, he will find shotguns, Kalashnikovs, grenades, Molotov’s cocktails and more as he goes along each of the levels. Personally, I really enjoyed the phaser which turns enemies into sausage poo - I laughed out loud the first time it happened! Unfortunately, all these weapons are limited in regards to ammunition.

Each of the levels has three checkpoints and every time Flint reaches one of them it will save his progress. Expect him to die a lot; it will become a sort a blessing when he reaches one of the checkpoints. Within each of the levels, Flint will have to face a large number of enemies who will appear from both side of the screen as well as from the top, with these crazy birds that drop poisoned swordfish, and mad flying Panda bears suspended from coloured balloons that drop right on his head!  Be ready when you see the word DANGER popping up on your screen - it’s going to be tough! With all this fighting, Flint will be hit constantly and the only way for him to regenerate his health is to eat a big, fat hamburger.

So far I’ve managed to beat two bosses, and the fights were ok. I find it harder to beat the stages before the bosses fight. There’s plenty of humour in Creepy Road, with some fun one or two-liners, such as “thank god for the Kalashnikovs” every time you pick one up!

The cartoon graphics are great and the game has a very good soundtrack. You can play with your mouse and keyboard but I would strongly recommend playing with a gamepad. One of the limitations is that Flint can only shoot vertically and horizontally, and not diagonally, which is a bit of a shame.

Positives

+ Great cartoon graphics
+ Plenty of fun enemies to kill
+ Fun to play, and challenging
+ Good soundtrack
+ Achievements

Negatives

- Can’t shoot diagonally
- Can become frustrating
- No trading cards as yet
