Coffin Rot Brewing Co.

Review

Well, there you go; you just kicked the bucket! But it doesn’t end here for you, my friend, as you are now the proud owner and bartender of the Coffin Rot Brewing and Co. Bar! Your clientele is faithful and pays rather well for a mug of your tasting brew. But these pirate ghosts like to be served with clean mugs and on a spotless benchtop. It’s a bit demanding for a bunch of undead, wouldn’t you say? Oh, and make sure you have a good arsenal to push back those skeletons who are after your well-earned gold! And while you’re at it, could you please serve me a pint of your blue brew? Wishing you all the best serving the undead!

Coffin Rot Brewing Co. is a VR management/arcade/shooter game developed by Nooner Bear Studio LLC and published by Clique Games on the 13th of March 2020 on the Steam platform.

At first, your establishment will not look great, and you’ll receive a few tips from the skeleton hanging on the beam. He is pretty funny, by the way, and you’ll hear from him a fair bit as you play the game.

So, the front of your bar is set up as a semi-circle where you will serve drinks to the pirate’s ghosts. You’ll have three tabs of different coloured brews behind it. You’ll also have a bucket of soapy water behind the bar for cleaning and a couple of mugs for your first playthrough. You’ll unlock new features for your establishment, new weapons and new accessories after completing tasks. You’ll be able to unlock them prior to each of your playthroughs, assuming that you have completed the tasks. Things like cleaning 25 mugs, serving 25 drinks etc.

So, when you play the game, pirates will appear at your bar and ask for a drink. Usually, the blue pirate wants a blue drink, the green a green drink and the magenta a magenta drink. In front of the pirates, you have a mug icon that will start to fade away as a counter, and you must serve the drink before the count runs out. Each time you serve the pirate drinks on time, you get paid! You’ll see your gold growing each time you use the tabs. There is an open room at the back of your bar.  As you progress, some of the pirates will change their mind on which coloured brews they want, which can happen twice during the countdown to serve him the drink. And, you have another type of pirate (goldish pirate) who seems to love frosties! The cardboard glass and the can are located on the shelf under the bar, and the countdown for these pirates is a little bit faster.

So, imagine, you have three pirates coming at once, and you only have two mugs at the start. You have to make sure you serve them, and then clean the mess they left on the bar. Oh, and you can only clean two spots before dropping the brush in the bucket for more detergent, and don’t forget to clean the MUGS! Man, it can become hectic at times.

Hold on . . . that’s not the end of it! Skeletons will start coming from the front and side doors. Some will be hiding in barrels, while others will leave their bodies behind and just have a floating skull moving towards your gold and pitching it! Thank god you have a musket loaded with one bullet at a time. Are you kidding me? It’s mad! Well, you still have a complementary bomb and two raffle bullet bags to use if you are in need. Personally, I only used them before the Kraken entered the bar.

Yes, you are going to fight the Kraken, and when will it happen? Well, when you haven’t served a few pirates on time. So what is the Kraken fight all about? Well, it will steal your gold super fast. You have to shoot the tentacles in front of you that hold bags of gold to minimise your loss, but you also have to destroy the two massive tentacles on the left and right of the bar. And let me tell you, it will take you a while before you manage to snap them in half. If you have one or two bombs in hand, I strongly suggest using the candle on your bar to light the bombs and send your regards to these tentacles.

At some stage during your playthrough, a ball will appear on your bar, and you’ll have to pick up one of the three cards available. One card will give you an additional weapon, the second will give you an extra bomb and two raffle bags to use, and the third one will allow you to receive more gold from your customers.

It is a fun game and the graphics are fabulous.  I was really impressed with the weapon system as it is very easy to reload and aim. There is a bit of humour, and the voice-over is well done.
