Beat The Game

Review

Important News Flash for all hoverbike owners . . . in the last few weeks, the authority recorded an alarming number of accidents in the desert involving hoverbike riders and fridges! It has become a trend for people to drop their old fridges in the desert, and an even bigger trend for riders to smash their bikes into them at night due to poor visibility. And you, my friend Mistik, you missed the news flash and indeed rode into one tonight!

Beat The Game is an adventure / puzzle game where you play Mistik, a strange character who is dressed like a prison inmate and carries a holographic music mixer wherever he goes.

After the introduction cut-scene, where Mistik smashes his bike into the unidentified object, he will wake up in a surreal area. This area is basically where all the game will take place and you’ll probably familiarise yourself with it in the first ten to twenty minutes. The goal of this game is to collect all the sounds within the map, mix them to create great rhythms and put on a show at night using your music mixer to exit this section and win the game.

Mistik has another couple of instruments besides his music mixer. The first one is a sound scanner. By using this device, Mistik will be able to track sounds within the area. As soon as he identifies a sound, he will have to follow the sound with his scanner for five seconds to record it onto his mixer. There are twenty-four sounds in total to record in this game. Also, there are collectables lying on the ground for him to pick up, some of which will be needed to create new sounds.  Others will be used to activate a different device, such as the Laser Mark Object.

Graphically, Beat The game looks very good; the animations and cut-scenes are very well done. I really enjoyed mixing all the sounds together and creating smashing rhythms. In terms of controls, you can use your mouse and keyboard or your gamepad, which are all responsive. My biggest complaint is the length of the game. It will be finished within an hour to an hour and a half maximum. It would have been nice to have at least a few more levels with new sounds to elevate the game further. I really like the concept, artwork, and being a DJ for a while. However, I wanted more.

Positives

+ Nice artwork
+ Smooth animations and cut-scene
+ Easy to play for all ages
+ Fun to mix sounds and feel like a DJ
+ Fridges in the desert!

Negatives

Review Summary

A great concept with nice animations and artwork. It’s so much fun to mix sounds together and feel like the DJ I always wanted to be!
