Arrow Heads

Review

This is crazy what I am about to tell you! Did you know that a chook’s favourite past time is. . .  archery? That’s right, archery - and some of those birds (or so I’ve heard) are bloody skilful! Crazy, hey?! Nevertheless, from now on every time I see a bird, I’m going to check to see if he has a bow and arrow on his back (I don’t want to be a recipient of an arrow through the head!

Arrow Heads is a multiplayer online and co-operative game where you control a chook (at first) through frantic archery battles.

There are two modes of play in Arrow Heads: Arcade and Arena. In the Arcade, you can play by yourself or with three of your friends on the same screen. The goal here is to eliminate twenty-five waves of enemies or order to win. Bear in mind that you only have ninety seconds per wave to do so. The waves are filled with bears! Some will run at you in an attempt to hit and shock you, while others will be armed with bow and arrows, harpoons and other crazy weapons. In this mode you’ll only have three lives or three chances to beat twenty-five waves. Every time you kill an enemy, he will drop yellow coins. Pick them as fast as you can to fill the spin gauge. When it’s full, you’ll be able to activate it and receive a better arrow for a short period of time, or even an extra life if you have lost one!  Personally, I like the rocket or the tesla coil arrows, as you can kill your enemies quickly. There are only three maps so far for this mode, which is too few in my opinion.

The Arena mode is basically playing online against three of your friends. Here, the first chook to reach ten kills wins the rounds. The difference in this mode is that you don’t have a spin gauge.  An egg will drop from the sky here and there, with one special weapon, and whoever picks it up first can become the most deadly bird around!

At the end of each game you’ll earn some coins which you can use to purchase either new customizations for your character, or bows and arrows.

The gameplay is far better by using a gamepad. Use the left stick to move your character around and right stick to draw your bow. It’s not that easy at first, let me tell you! You can also jump and dash which can be extremely useful to avoid an incoming arrow and to stun an opponent (with the dash).

The cartoon-style graphics are fun and well done, and I really the singing bird tenor. In terms of the controls, I prefer to play Arrow Heads with a gamepad.

Positives

+ Fun cartoon graphics
+ Co-op and online game
+ Fun and easy to play when you get used to the aiming system
+ Achievements & trading cards

Negatives

- Needs to have more maps, especially on the Arcade mode

Review Summary

Arrow Heads is fun, fast, and you’re going to have a ball playing either with or against your friends.
