Squids From Space

Review

Captain . . . have a listen to this squishing sound - I’ve never heard this sound from space before! Captain . . . have a look at my monitor - it’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen in my life! Look in the middle of the screen, it looks like a squid and its getting bigger and bigger every minute; what do we do, Captain? By Poseidon’s mercy, it’s a full alert - we’re being invaded by Squids from Space!

Squids From Space is an action, PvP (8 vs 8) top down tactical shooter where you can play as a soldier to defend the earth or as a squid and try to conquer it.

You will be greeted with a fun 1950’s-style menu with a newspaper headline, reading, “The Squids Are Here!” From that point, you can either checkout the server lists or just press play. Essentially, you have eight contestants playing in each of the races and the your goal is to pick up either the human general or the squid brain from their own base to yours three times in the raw to win the game.

Each of the races has their pros and cons. The squids are better at harvesting than the humans. What do their harvest, you might ask? Well . . . barrels, tables, lights, dresses, car doors and many other things within the map. Each of these items has a points value, and you have one dedicated drop spot per race at the start of the game. There are another two drop spots but you have to gain and retain the spots to be able to use them.  Let me tell you that it will be an ongoing battle and these drop spots will swap hands every few minutes.  Each of the races can unlock four upgrades within the battle by accumulating resources as fast as possible.  A few times during the fight, citizens will need to be rescued (if you play for the humans) or abducted (If you are the squids). These citizens carry the biggest points in the game and can help you reach your level four upgrade very quickly.

You have six different weapons on each of the races when you reach the fourth upgrade. As I mentioned above, the Squids have an advantage in harvesting and they also have a crawling tank, which is so much fun. They also have the invisibility skill but it can only be used for about ten seconds. The humans have great weaponry, including powerful explosives and stand-alone machine guns which can be very deadly. If you play the humans, you must make sure to hit the squid head to register your kill. Be aware though, these squid heads can role and jump on your head to take control of your body.  It’s really fun!

This game is currently on early access and offers one map to play at this stage.  You will be able to find a game very easily, but might be playing against bots most of the time. I did manage to play with other players and boy, it was fun! This is a game to look at closely – It could become something special, in my opinion.

Graphically, the game looks great and runs very well. I personally didn’t have any issues playing it. The controls are very responsive. I really like the 1950’s theme - it’s just great!

Positives

+ Great graphics
+ Game runs smoothly
+ Fun and easy to play
+ Good weaponry and upgrades on both races

Negatives

- Need more maps, only one at this stage
- No Achievements or trading cards

Review Summary

Whether you play the humans or the Squids from space, you’ll have fun - Squids from Space is definitely a title to keep a close eye on!
