Slime-san

Review

San was sliming away happily in a lush garden for his morning slime as he does every single day. As he was sliming from stem to stem, the ground suddenly started shaking! From the corner of his eye, he distinctly identified a worm form, honing in on him with a wide open mouth as fast as ever! Well, you guessed it! He was gobbled up! No time to waste, he needs to get out of this worm pronto before being digested!  This is not what Slime-san was expecting for his daily morning slime!

Slime-san is a platformer game where you play a slime who has to beat one hundred levels within a worm’s digestive system in order to reach the worm’s mouth and successfully escape.

The hundred levels are divided into five sections within the worm, with twenty levels per section. The first thing you need to know is that each level has four stages to clear in order to get to the next one. Within each stage, you will probably notice a green apple which always seems to be in a rather awkward place to reach (by the way, it’s done on purpose). You will occasionally see a coin with the letter A on it; these are even harder to reach.  The good news is that you will be able to buy different shapes of slimes, outfits and side arts using your apple, and even unlock classic arcade games with your coins at the Slumptown.

The gameplay is simple, fun and very challenging. In a nutshell, you have to navigate your creature through a parkour to reach the sign with an arrow on the other side of the screen.  If you manage to complete all the stages within a specific number of seconds, you’ll be rewarded with a trophy. Rest assured, it won’t be easy; you’ll have a stack of obstacles to avoid and it will be rare to see them through on your first go. Yes, you’ll die quite a lot in this game! However, your small green thingy has a few abilities to help see him through the stages. At first he can jump, or even double jump, on walls too.  He can dash to break blocks or dash through the air in the middle of a jump to a platform which seems to be inaccessible. The one I really like is the slow motion ability – morph - which is super important on some levels. You can also pass through green walls by using it, but be careful not to land in the worm’s stomach acid, which is red.  I nearly forgot to mention the red acid wall. Yes, there is an acid wall that will come at you a few seconds after you start the stage to make it even harder and increase your death toll. In short, avoid touching or being touched with anything red!

Graphically the pixel artwork is really fun and the soundtrack is upbeat and quite catchy. As for the controls, they are very responsive either with the keyboard or the gamepad. It did take me twice as long to finish the first world by using the keyboard. Definitely easier to use the gamepad.
