Angels of Death

Review

Rachel Gardner is a thirteen year-old girl with crystal blue eyes. She is sitting in an examination room at a local hospital in a state of shock. Her parents were brutally murdered at home and she was the only survivor. Is it the work of the serial killer who is on a killing spree across the city or is it something far more sinister? The doctor keeps asking her questions but she is not responding. Rachel. . .  Rachel. . .  . . .  Where am I? What is this Room? Who is calling me? A fake blue moon in the window? I need to get out of here.

Angel of Death is a horror / adventure game where you play Rachel, who wakes up in an unknown building basement. Not only has she no idea where she is, but she does not recollect what has happened to her. Angel of Death is divided into four episodes. Each episode will take around two to two and a half hours to complete, depending on how fast you can read.

The first level is fairly easy and it is mostly designed (in my opinion) to show you how to interact with objects and how to use them to solve puzzles. Realistically, the puzzles are not that hard; the game is based more on the storyline than the puzzles. A few of the puzzles will have a time limit on them (and you will die if you are do not succeed within the time limit), but mostly you can take your time to solve them.

The characters you will encounter in Angel of Death are very interesting, and each of them is very well created. Each time you meet a new character the story will evolve beautifully, and in some cases, unexpectedly. To give you an idea, you will meet Zack early in the story. At first it will be a confrontation and you will have to run faster than him or be slashed in two. Shortly after he will become Rachel’s companion and open the story so much. There are a lot of twists in the story; you really need to play it to see - I don’t want to spoil it for you. It is really simple, as soon as you finishe episode one, you will start the second and so on and so forth.

Another aspect of the game I really like is how the atmosphere is portrayed in specific situations. The soundtrack will change depending on which phase you are in, with faster music if you are being chased, strange laughs and sounds in dark places, and sorrowful music when the character is reflecting on who he/she is. It brings the game together so well.

Great pixel artwork and I must admit the levels are well-designed too. Great storyline with complex characters. Control-wise, it could have been better especially when you have to run away from difficult situations. Should have been a bit more responsive in my opinion.
